Community Safety: A Priority for Ward 6

This week at the doors in Wentworth and Signal Hill, I heard from many residents who are deeply concerned about safety in their neighbourhoods. The issue most often raised was dangerous driving and drag racing on Stoney Trail and other city streets, which has become a growing risk for families.

Summer speeding seems to be up across Calgary’s roads, but on Stoney Trail and in our Ward 6 communities, the dangers are especially close to home. Parents are worried for their children walking to the park, seniors fear crossing the street, and families with pets feel increasingly unsafe. Tragically, one resident even shared that they were rear-ended just days ago and are now suffering from whiplash.

Calgarians Deserves Safety

Every Calgarian deserves to live in a neighbourhood that is safe. Safe from reckless drivers, safe when walking on sidewalks, and safe when enjoying our parks and green spaces. These concerns aren’t abstract — they impact daily life, from whether parents feel comfortable letting their kids bike to school, to whether seniors can go for a walk without fear.

The Impact of Stoney Trail

With the opening of Stoney Trail at Bow Trail and Old Banff Coach Road, new traffic patterns have also created new challenges. Residents in Wentworth have seen a rise in property crime, with thieves taking advantage of easier access in and out of the community. When combined with increased traffic speeds, it’s clear that enforcement and prevention need to be top priorities.

Police and Enforcement

Increased enforcement and visible patrols in our communities can make a significant

difference in deterring dangerous driving drag racing, property crime, and other high-risk behaviours.

A Broader View of Safety

While traffic enforcement and crime prevention are urgent, community safety goes beyond our roads. It also means:

  • Well-lit pathways and parks and open sightlines so families feel secure after dark.
  • Strong collaboration with neighbourhood associations to address localized safety concerns.
  • Preventing crime before it happensby supporting youth programs, community services, and partnerships that keep people engaged and connected.

Moving Forward

The message from Ward 6 is clear: community safety matters. The City overspends in many areas. Policing is a core service with strong community support, and I will advocate to reprioritize spending so these essentials have the resources they need.

Together, we can make Ward 6 a community where residents don’t just live — they thrive knowing their safety is a priority.
