Blanket Rezoning Doesn’t Work

Blanket Rezoning: Rushed and Ignored Community Voices

On May 14, 2024, Calgary City Council passed one of the most sweeping land use changes in our city’s history—blanket rezoning all residential properties to R-CG, a designation that allows for duplexes, triplexes, rowhouses, and secondary suites. This decision was made despite unprecedented public pushback. Over 6,100 written submissions were received, 88% of which opposed the change. Of the 736 speakers at public hearings, 62% voiced their opposition.

Despite this overwhelming feedback, Council moved forward. Worse yet, very little consultation took place with Community Associations—the very organizations that serve as the voice of our neighbourhoods. Decisions of this magnitude should be built on consensus and dialogue, not rushed through in marathon meetings.

Blanket rezoning strips away local decision-making and disregards the people who have invested time, energy, and resources into building our communities. I will vote to repeal this policy and advocate for planning that is driven by community input, not bureaucratic decree.
