With today’s Green Line LRT project update, it is good to see the city and province collaborate to advance this vital transit initiative.
The prior decision to run only from Eau Claire to Lynnwood/Millican was both unpopular and was rife with several other issues that would have dramatically increased project costs.
The announcement that Phase 1 will not be halted and work will move forward from 4th Street SE to Shepard is very encouraging. Keeping the tracks above ground or at grade is a huge win for taxpayers. I did not agree with the previous iteration of the Green Line plan, but I also didn’t want to see jobs in peril, prior investments lost, and likely lawsuits. This collaboration between the City and the Province will hopefully resolve those challenges while keeping the modified project alive.
Calgarians have long supported an efficient and affordable transit system, and this new plan is a step in the right direction. By connecting to the existing Red and Blue lines, I believe the revised alignment enhances the overall network, ensuring that far more residents can access public transit easily, quickly and affordably.
The collaboration between city and provincial officials signals a commitment to investing in Calgary’s public transportation infrastructure, which is crucial for supporting the city’s growth and enhancing the quality of life for all Calgarians.
